ARA- Project Farmer Managed Seed System

Our primary objective is to investigate the viability and potential benefits of farmer-managed seed systems within the Kafue region

Our ongoing initiative in this area is dedicated to amplifying the voices of local women farmers and identifying sustainable solutions to climate change adaptation that can be scaled up for broader impact.

Through an extensive survey on indigenous knowledge practices being employed in the region, we have unearthed a significant recommendation that has garnered considerable community interest – the establishment of seed banks featuring a diverse array of local seed varieties. These local seed varieties play a pivotal role in facilitating adaptation to changing climate conditions. They exhibit remarkable resilience by requiring minimal fertilizers and demonstrating resistance to drought, making them well-suited for the region’s challenging environmental conditions.

Regrettably, these invaluable local seed varieties have fallen into disuse over time, largely due to the prevailing trend favoring hybrid varieties. Hybrid seeds necessitate annual replenishment, resulting in recurring costs that many farmers in the region find increasingly difficult to manage. This financial burden has been exacerbated by the ever-rising cost of living.

In response to this pressing issue, our project aims to explore the reintegration of local seed varieties into the farming practices of the Kafue community. By establishing seed banks and promoting the utilization of these indigenous seeds, we aspire to not only enhance the resilience of local farmers but also reduce their dependency on costly hybrid alternatives. Our endeavor is rooted in the belief that these sustainable practices can pave the way for a more prosperous and resilient agricultural future in Kafue.

CESR-project Decoding Injustice

In light of the pervasive marginalization faced by women living in rural areas across Zambia

The Women’s Liberation and Welfare Foundation (WLWF) is committed to addressing this issue head-on. Leveraging the power of the Decoding Injustice approach, our organization seeks to undertake a comprehensive survey. This survey will collect invaluable data, enabling us to hold decision makers accountable for upholding the economic rights of women throughout the country.

Our methodology revolves around a three-pronged approach: Interrogate, Illuminate, and Inspire. Through these steps, we aim to identify the core drivers of gender-based economic inequality, shed a much-needed spotlight on them, and subsequently develop a strategic advocacy plan. This plan will serve as our guiding compass, directing our efforts within our advocacy program.

Our advocacy initiatives will center on the vital task of ensuring that critical documents, such as the Constituency Development Fund guidelines, the National Budget, and the broader planning processes, are thoroughly engendered and responsive to the rights of women in Zambia. By striving for gender-sensitive policy changes and equitable economic opportunities, we aspire to foster a more inclusive and just society for all.

Goals:

Data-Driven Accountability: Collect comprehensive data to effectively hold decision makers accountable for upholding women’s economic rights.

Interrogate: Identify and understand the key drivers of gender-based economic inequality in rural Zambia.

Illuminate: Shine a spotlight on these critical issues, raising awareness and encouraging dialogue.

Inspire: Develop an advocacy plan that inspires positive change, guiding our efforts to empower women economically.

Engendered Policies: Advocate for the engendering of essential documents, such as the Constituency Development Fund guidelines, the National Budget, and planning processes.

At WLWF, we are committed to driving tangible, equitable change for women in rural Zambia. Join us in our mission to ensure economic justice and uplift the lives of marginalized women across the country. Together, we can build a brighter and more inclusive future.
