Founded in 1985 by African women in the diaspora, AMwA is committed to advancing the rights and status of African women, embracing the meaning of “solidarity among African women.”

For over three decades, AMwA has been fearlessly challenging entrenched patriarchal structures to amplify the voices of women on society’s margins. They have cultivated feminist leaders through their flagship program, the African Women’s Leadership Institute (AWLI), which has birthed a community of over 8000 feminist leaders championing women’s rights across Africa.

In collaboration with sister organizations, AMwA has forged strong coalitions that influence policy-making at national and regional levels. They proudly contribute to the ratification and domestication of crucial protocols and campaigns for gender justice, such as the Maputo Protocol and the zero-tolerance campaign on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

AMwA’s commitment to promoting women’s rights extends to global forums, including consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and observer status at the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights.

But AMwA’s impact isn’t confined to policy alone. They host the Uganda Feminist Forum (UFF) and participate in the African Feminist Forum (AFF), nurturing feminist consciousness and engagement while prioritizing sisterhood, inter-generational solidarity, and intersectional feminism.

 Vision

AMwA envisions a dignified and equitable feminist society for African women and girls in all their diversities.

Mission

To build feminist leadership and collective power to deconstruct intersectional systems of oppression to advance women and girls’ social justice.
